Explore the list below to find available postgraduate research programmes in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
You can also view our active doctoral projects.
There are different programme options available. A PhD is a research programme of study and training that lasts 3 to 4 years and leads to the award of a doctorate. An MPhil is a 1 year research programme with no compulsory taught component that leads to the award of a master’s degree and can potentially lead into the second year of a PhD programme. An MSc by Research is a 1 year research-focused programme of study with some taught components that leads to the award of a master’s degree. An MSc by Research programme has a longer research project component than a standard taught master’s programme and is often useful preparation for further postgraduate research study.
These programmes can either be self-funded or externally funded, or may be funded through Doctoral Training Programmes or University scholarships. The University website provides information and resources on Funding for a postgraduate degree and on Funding a master’s degree. We recommend that you contact potential supervisors to find out more about possible postgraduate research degree projects, and funding opportunities. Potential supervisors can be identified using the list of academic and research staff within the Department.
